The Reasoning for a
FULLY INCLUSIVE PLAYGROUND
Inclusivity vs. ADA Compliance in Parks and Playgrounds
When a child steps into a playground or park, they enter a world of possibility. These spaces offer more than just play equipment — they're a cornerstone of community, learning, and growth.
But how do we ensure that everyone, regardless of ability, can share in this experience? The journey begins with understanding the distinction and connection between inclusivity and ADA compliance. Let's explore this relationship, illustrating how you can create environments that welcome all.
What is ADA Compliance?
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), signed into law on July 26, 1990, sets the stage for accessibility in public spaces, including parks and playgrounds. ADA compliance is a legal requirement that aims to eliminate barriers for individuals with disabilities, including employment, transportation, public accommodations, communications, and state and local government programs and services.
In 2010, the ADA released standards for accessible design to help provide clear guidelines for parks and playgrounds. It covers a wide range of criteria, from the size of pathways to the accessibility of play equipment and other amenities — from the parking lot to the edge of the play area. Compliance ensures that those with physical and sensory disabilities can access and enjoy public play spaces safely and independently.
What is Inclusivity?
Inclusivity, while encompassing ADA compliance, stretches beyond to embrace a broader spectrum of needs, including emotional, social, and cognitive aspects. It's about creating spaces where everyone feels valued and included regardless of ability, age, or background.
An inclusive playground or park is designed with the understanding that every child is unique, fostering an environment where all children can play together in a rich, engaging, and educational setting. The inclusion created by these parks and playgrounds encourages children, adults, and families to experience the benefits of playing together. Article continues here.

El Dorado County is in the process of updating its local Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) for the Western Slope of the County. This plan aims to identify local wildfire hazards and risks and outlines actions to address them. It will help set priorities for the community and support funding requests for wildfire mitigation projects.
For example: Take a look at the before and after photos of Fire Adapted 50: Phase 1 (Sly Park)—the first of many wildfire fuel break projects aimed at increasing fire resiliency and creating fire-adapted communities along the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) of the U.S. Highway 50 corridor.
This project was initiated after the King Fire and a cooperative effort between the El Dorado & Georgetown Divide Resource Conservation Districts, CAL FIRE Amador-El Dorado Unit, El Dorado Irrigation District, the U.S. Forest Service - Eldorado National Forest, and Sierra Pacific Industries.
More than 6000 acres have been completed and work is still ongoing. The Fire Adapted 50 Cohesive Strategy is a perfect example of what a well-developed CWPP can achieve. The result? A more fire-resilient landscape that better protects our communities from the devastating impacts of wildfires.
The CWPP aims to continue this kind of vital work, making our region safer and more resilient. By participating in the CWPP process, you can help shape future projects like this one and ensure our communities are well-prepared for wildfire threats. Let us know what projects would benefit your community by taking the survey and/or attending our local CWPP workshop:

This achievement is the result of the dedicated efforts of our staff, who went above and beyond to ensure compliance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR). Article continues here.
EID TOURS: In coordination with plant operations the District holds public tours of our water and wastewater treatment plants.
